It is an enlargement of the thyroid gland.
a) Under activity (hypothyroidism) or over activity (hyperthyroidism ) of the gland;
b) malignant (not frequent);
c) if associated with hypethyroidism known as toxic goiter (also Graves disease, thyrotoxicosis);
d) if associated with hypothyroidism (myxedema).
Common forms of this disease aresimple goiter and toxic goiter.
Simple goiter may arise from a lack of iodine.
Toxic goiter is charactrised by an increase in the basal metabolic rate. The patient becomes irritable, loses weight and has an increased pulse rate.
