Disorders Of The Gastro – Intestinal System

Stomatitis

STOMATITIS

Stomatitis or inflammation of the mucous membrane lining of the mouth, may be of several types. The most commonly encountered is gingivitis or inflammation of the gums, which is usually by bacterial infection, but may also due to vitamin deficiencies. In stomatitis associated, with nutritional deficiencies, acupuncture therapy should be couples with proper intake of nourishment.

Thrush is stomatitis caused by infection with the fungus ‘candida albicans’. This condition is characterized by a white membrane covering the inside of the mouth and may occur following the prolonged use of antibiotics and steroids.

Allergic reaction to locally applied disinfectants and chemicals such as those found in toothpastes and sweets may also cause stomatitis. It is important to eliminate the offending material. The development of certain multiple ulcers of the mucous membrane of the mouth is termed aphthous stomatitis and is said to be associated with emotional stress.

Dysphagia

DYSPHAGIA (DIFFICULTY OF SWALLOWING)

Most diseases of the esophagus cause dysphagia. It may also be caused by certain diseases of the mouth and pahrynx  such as stomatitis and tonsilitis. Since, however, dysphagia may be due to causes such as neoplasms ( especially in elderly people), the patient must be fully investigated before acupuncture is commenced to eliminate such etiology. Where surgical , radiotherapy, or other treatment has been carried out and the swallowing difficulty still persists, the acupuncture may be tried for symptomatic relief. In treating dysphagia due ot motor-neurone disease good results have been obtained by using acupuncture. Dysphagia due to psychosomatic causes, such as hysteria, respond well to acupuncture.
